The PE and Games department aims to give the pupils of Elizabeth College Junior School (ECJS) a safe and enjoyable environment to develop their skills and sporting knowledge across a broad range of activities. The pupils are given the opportunity to do this, through the curriculum and extensive range of extra-curricular activities the department provides.

Basic skills and tactics are taught to the pupils within each of the above disciplines. Pupils are also given the opportunity to share their achievements at Sports Day, which is held at the end of Trinity Term.

Extra Curricular

Acorn House provides a range of After School Clubs to Year 2 pupils. These include: Dance, Athletics and Basketball. Visit the Extra-Curricular page for more details.

PE

ph_js_sport03Each child receives one 35-minute lesson per week. All lessons are taught by PE specialists and cover Gymnastics, Dance, Athletics and the newly introduced Multi Skills programme. Multi Skills has been developed through work with the Guernsey Sports Commission and focuses on agility, balance and co-ordination, which are the key factors for most sports. The children have the opportunity to attempt activity cards that get progressively harder. Individual and group based activities are used to develop a specific attribute, before retrying the activity cards. This programme has been a great success so far. The children have responded superbly to this new initiative, enjoying the broad range of activities that the programme has to offer.

Games

Two one-hour lessons per week are offered to all of the pupils. The Games programme is an extensive one, with the following sports on offer:

– Football
– Netball
– Basketball
– Swimming
– Hockey
– Fencing
– Outdoor Activities
– Tag Rugby
– Athletics
– Cricket
– Rounders

Skills, tactics and game play are taught across the range of activities. The pupils are given the maximum time possible to develop their skills in a game situation. This is not only through the lesson, but also in Inter House Competitions, Sports Day, Swimming Galas, Cross Country Series and other events hosted by ECJS and outside agencies.

Tours

ph_js_sport10

The School is able to offer the opportunity to travel to the UK for three tours: Football, Hockey and Cricket. Long standing links with schools on the mainland have been developed. These trips offer an excellent opportunity for our sports teams to play against stronger opposition. The School also hosts each of the schools in return, playing hockey and cricket across the three tours.
