Restoration of Historic College Pavilion

Elizabeth College has submitted plans for remedial works to one of its most iconic heritage buildings, the College Pavilion at College Field, located off the King’s Road.

The proposed works will focus on the replacement of the existing balcony structure and balustrade, as well as the installation of sail awnings. Improvements to accessibility are also planned, including enhancements to the external staircase and surrounding pathway.

Originally designed by architect W.V. Quilter and constructed by Messrs W. and E. Rabey during the winter of 1923–24, the College Pavilion is a prominent feature of the College’s historic estate. Over the past century, the Pavilion has served as the venue for thousands of sporting matches, as well as numerous social functions, including a recent croquet event hosted for members of the Elizabeth College legacy club.

As part of its commitment to the stewardship of historic buildings, Elizabeth College undertakes a proactive programme of planned maintenance, overseen by its dedicated Estates and Maintenance Team. However, following a recent structural assessment, it has been determined that the condition of the predominantly timber balcony and access steps requires more substantial remedial work beyond routine maintenance.

The proposed enhancements will not only improve structural integrity and safety but also offer an opportunity to modernise the materials used, ensuring durability while preserving the building’s character. Notably, the height of the balustrade will be raised to current safety standards, and the roof of the balcony will be replaced with removable sun sails, designed to provide functional shade in a manner that complements the Pavilion’s architectural style.

Beyond its sporting role, the Pavilion holds historical significance. During the Second World War, it notably served as a refuge for daring OEs Hubert Nicolle (4193) and James Symes (3967), who hid within the building while evading occupying forces, spending four days in the College Pavillion while on a reconnaissance mission for the British Army.

Originally funded by the Old Elizabethan Association and conceived as part of the College’s First World War Memorial, the Pavilion continues to hold deep significance for the Elizabeth College community. This restoration project reaffirms the College’s ongoing commitment to preserving its heritage for future generations.

Elizabeth College is grateful for the support of local architectural professionals, The Drawing Room, on these important proposed works.
