Winchester Building & Cottage
Winchester Building stands on land close to the site of the first Elizabeth College buildings when the school was founded in 1563. Part of the old College arch was incorporated into the new building which was opened in 1965.
It was named The Winchester Building in recognition of the strong ties the College had with both the Diocese of Winchester and its bishops, the official ‘Visitors’ to the school since the 1850s. Dr Falkner Allison, Winchester’s bishop at the time, performed the opening ceremony. The bishop read the prayer which had been said at the laying of the foundation stone of the main building in 1826: "I dedicate this building to the glory of God, for the advancement of knowledge, the discovery of truth and the appreciation of beauty."
